So, following my exciting Harry Potter filled morning on Friday, I attended "Nous" the Philosophy club at Weber State University. Considering how both of my sisters, Rachel and Brooke, are Philosophy majors - I had heard much about the topic and was able to comprehend much of the debate. The topic Friday evening was "The Objectivity of Science" Dr. Dan Schroeder from the physics department spoke about how scientific truths are objective rather than subjective. He argued his position by refuting the claims of Kuhn - a contemporary relativist philosopher of science. I however felt that he did a very poor job. I felt like he missed the issue - I think that he should have spent his time refuting the claims of indirect or representative realists or idealists like Berkeley or Locke. The only way to successfully argue for the subjectivity of physical truths is to embrace these indirect realists or idealist veiws - in other words, to claim that either we cannot preceive the outside world - or there is no physical world. I dont think that Kuhn embraces either of these views so I dont think his argument was relevent. He perhaps on some level embraces Idealism, but this is not the point that Dr. Schroeder attacked. He rather attacked the claim that there are certain levels of truth in Aristotlelian, Newtonian, (is that a word) and Einstienien physics. This I felt was irrelevent. He addressed one concept in particular - the Theory of gravity He stated that he thinks that the theories get truer with every revolution - a point terribly attacked by both Professor Greene and Professor Fudge.

Well at any rate - just stating my opinion.

I loved GOF, I will probably post a review sometime.

What?!? The Template WIZARD?!?!

As you may have noticed (if you have the tendency to turn to my blog for your source of entertainment) I have basically changed my blogger template every week or so! What you may think, is wrong. I'm sorry, I'm not doing this to confuse you and make you wonder if you've strayed to the wrong blog when you open this page. I'm doing this becase I hate you, and I don't want you to read my blog. Just kidding. Why can't I do that with a straight face?
Nevertheless, if you haven't gotten to this page press TIMES NOW!! (Yes, I know that it won't do any good if they haven't gotten to this page in the first place!) Press it, and you'll get to my blog, I promise. While we're on the subject press DIFFICULT to get to my 'profile on the page', LIE to get to my links (which I probably haven't updated yet...sorry) and AHEAD to get to my 'tagboard' What the heck is a tagboard? Well, never count on me ever getting one of those. I'm sure there are thousands of you, desperatly searching my home page trying to find my blog with tears in your eyes. I'm still desperatly trying to find a way to make it say how to manuver on the front page. I've fiddled with the template alot and I think I'm close to a breakthrough!
On another note, I know some of you are whining about how my blog is in this tiny box and you have to scroll down a thousand times to even get to it. I'm sorry. I'll change my template soon, but this is in honor of the holiday (well it is for potterheads) that celebrates the release of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. Now I know that compared to the books, the movies are evil doctors trying to rip your still beating heart out through your anus, but it's Harry Potter! It's not a day to mourn (well, maybe it is...I haven't seen the movie) It's a day to celebrate!! I'm almost postitive that they'll totally destroy the movie and I'll be throwing my popcorn and shoes among other things and the screen. I'm still going to see it on the first day, though! That's how big of a potter-head I am!
So how many of you are going to see it opening day? How many of you are going to dress up! I know I am! How many of you are going to dress up AND are over 18? Over 15? Over 10? Old but still a child in heart? Run over to by tagboard and give me a shoutout and an answer to all these questions. I NEED TO KNOW!!! That's right. I figured out what a tagboard is and I got one all in the duration of this entry! Gosh, I love google!

On this cold winter day...

I've been thinking alot about people that care what others think about them. You can identify them in the hall, the mall, or even sometimes in the car next to you. My concluding thought in this case is WHY?!
Sure, it's okay to some degree to care, like making a good impression on a business executive, for example. But these stupid things like wanting the popular girl in school to like you, or to be popular with the boys. It's so totally pointless. There is so much more to go for in the world then your 5 minutes of fame in the eyes of your junior high peers. Really, sometimes I see these girls starving themselves or doing things like making out or worse just to fit in. Don't they even care about their future lives? The worst thing is drugs. Why on EARTH would you do something like doing drugs or drinking alcohol; something that WILL endanger your life when you get older; to fit in?!?
It is important to apply yourself durring junior/high school, but in POSITIVE ways. I can't even imagine what my future will hold; I know what I want to do but I have no idea what lengths I will go to fulfill them. I'm the kind of person that wants to be successful, but is also afraid and doesn't want to grow up. I think we're all like that. That's why I enjoy being young and innocent and dependent. I love talking to my mother on the phone, and sleeping next to her when I get nightmares. I love to show off my kiddy artwork and get a new book to celebrate my good grades. I'm still a kid on many levels! And then you see these fifteen year old girls or younger with three year old children. Girls that are younger than me with children, just because they wanted to fit in or be loved. It's really sad, and I usually don't have any hard feelings for these girls or think badly about them. I have a tendency to blame the male population for these kinds of things. After all, I usually see GIRLS walking down grocery store isles with kids in thier baskets, not guys.
What I don't get, though, is when I see a girl like this with a five year old child, a three year old child, and a new born. This is when I stop blaming the males and start blaming the girls for no self control! Why, after going through a child at this age, would you decide (or even go through the process) to have another?! I don't get it!! I do, however, think that single mothers are perhaps the strongest in our society. Did you know that JK Rowling was a single mother? Society frowned down upon her but she didn't give up. That's the kind of person she was.
I don't lack the common sense to know that doing drugs or drinking, or getting involved with a boy before I'm mature enough (marrige, basically) will ruin my life. I've vowed never ever to do those things! I know I have so much going for me, and to ruin it now would be a waste in life. Even if you do something like that, like have a kid in particular, make the best of it. If you don't give it up for adoption make the best mother out of yourself as you can. Give it your all, because that's what you have chosen. I chose long ago to follow a different path. One that will guarentee me a large estate and a large bank account. There are so many exciting things in this world. Take your pick of what is to come.
I am periodically putting all of my previous posts off line. They should be back on around 10pm MST

Because it matters.

I am the mother who told her lesbian daughter to invite her girlfriend over for dinner.

I am the father who punished his son for calling you a fag.

I am the preacher who told my congregation that love, not hate, is the definition of a true follower of God.

I am the girl who did not learn the meaning of "homosexual" until high school but never thought to question why two men might be kissing.

I am the woman who argues (quite loudly and vehemently) with the bigots who insist that you do not have the right to marry or raise children.

We are the high school class who agrees, unanimously, along with our teacher, that love should be all that matters.

If you agree, repost this. Do it. You don't have to be afraid. You can handle it. You're stronger than you think.

I am making a difference. Hate will not win.

Are you?

NAL

I was doing my blog entry last night--and I thought I posted it, but instead I saved it as a draft. Sorry!!
I love NAL with every fiber of my being. It was soooo fun in eigth grade, and pretty fun in seventh. I guess for it to be truely fun you have to be way involved. Anyway, that's where my worrying comes in. I want, and although this might not be good to say due to the large number of people trying out for NAL in honors, but I want to be the captian of 1st quarter. I know all you get to do is do the tip-off question and introduce everybody; but I've been doing it for two years and I don't want some newbee to be captian! (except I probably wouldn't mind that much if Patti was, because Patti's awesome...and not a no0b!)
Mr. Carter isn't doing it this year. Mr. Carter is sooo hillarious and knows I would do good, but now Mrs. Turneau's doing it. No hard feelings to Turneau, I know she'll do an excellent job, but Carter actaully KNOWS me. If one kid in particular gets to be captian--and you that know me really well should know who I'm talking about--I'll go insane. Really insane. I just can't comprehend why they would put someone like him over me for captain. Wouldn't it just seem logical to put the one that's been on the team most as the captain? Wouldn't that be the thing to do? But I seem to always be wrong about what the right thing is. For instance, Olympiad last year I thought I should have been on the varsity team because I had experience. I may have done bad on the test, I don't really know, but I really don't thing that should beat out medaling experience.
This is turning into just one big stress-relieving rant, and I'm sorry. I need to get off the pressure somehow. I really don't think I have to worry, I really don't, but sometimes it's hard when you know that you don't get the academic coverage you deserve. It's really frustrating when you KNOW you are just as good as one person, and yet all the teachers seem to favor him.../her. I know I should devote two entire blog entries to this unfavorable trait of some teachers, but it's one of my biggest pet peeves in the world. I should just get over it, but I can't.
In conclusion...please try to stay away from that kind of activity. Don't make me devote an entire blog entry to you or something you've done...or haven't done.
